The new project
Craft the Leather Bespoke Edition is the new format by the Veg Tan Leather Consortium offering the opportunity of creating resident learning and experimenting programs for individual schools and groups.
This program offers an in-depht exploration of one of Tuscany’s local excellences, Vegetable Tanned Leather, a material closely connected to the lifestyle, values and culture of this area.
After launching in 2012 “Craft the Leather”, an invitation only project for international young designers, and in 2014 “Craft the Leather on the Road”, a travelling workshop for international fashion and design schools, now the Consortium is happy to announce “Craft the Leather Bespoke Edition”.
The Consortium offers a basic program that can be integrated with a wide range of optional activities, depending on the specific group’s interests.
The main focus of the project is encountering the veg tan material first hand, with the possibility of experimenting with the leathers in an open hand-on workshop environment, with a master craftsman working together with the participants and demostrating the traditional local skills.
The first group to catch this opportunity came from Japan. The students of the Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry from Tokyo were hosted in the historic Conservatorio di Santa Chiara in San Miniato last October 21.-22.-23., 2015 . They choose a short and intensive course, and in 3 days they visited a tannery, POTECO, and a high-end shoe factory. Then they delved deep into the fascinating world of crafting the veg tan leather during the workshop held by the Tuscan master craftsman Giorgio Testi.
On November 25th. we’ll welcome from the US a group of students of the Savannah College of Art and Design. They are going to stay in San Miniato one week and, together with the Tuscan Vegetable Tanned Leather, they will also have the chance to discover local wine and food at the 45° Mostra Nazionale del Tartufo Bianco di San Miniato (45° National Fair of the White Truffle from San Miniato).
